Action : The Final Advance in Flanders |
28 September - 11 November 1918. As the pressure mounted in other sectors the opportunity was seized to escape the confines of the Ypres Salient. Within five days the British Second Army had pushed the Germans back over the 1917 battlefield and were advancing on Courtrai. After action at Courtrai the advance continued into Belgium until the Armistice on 11th November.
Detail :
John Cotterill Lt Charles George SNEADE 4th Bn KIA 14/10/18. In the pause between the end of the last German offensive and the start of the British offensive SNEAD was leading a daylight reconnaissance patrol in No Mans Land near Mont de Merris in the Lys Valley. His patrol encountered a German patrol and fought them hand to hand, killing two and capturing two of the enemy. His award of the MC for this action was gazetted on 15 Oct 1918. However SNEAD was unaware of this as he was killed the previous day in the Battle of Courtrai. He was advancing E with the Bn from Ledeghem (where he is buried) towards Salines (3000 yds W of Courtrai). This was part of the final advance to victory. On the same day, in the same battalion there were 120 casualties including 2 Offrs and 11 ORs KIA. Amongst the 4 WORC R wounded that day was Capt Eugene BENNETT who won the VC at Le Transloy on 5 Nov 1916 with 2 WORC R.
