HMS Defiance was the Royal Navy's torpedo school, established in 1884 in the second rate HMS Defiance, and in subsequent ships that were renamed HMS Defiance. These included: HMS Defiance was the original school ship from 1884 until 1931. HMS Perseus was HMS Defiance II from 1904 until 1931. It seems that John SOUHAMY died of Natural Causes.
A record of Naval Casualties shows that Chief Gunner Souhamay of HMS Defiance, whilst on Sick Leave and at Plymouth Hospital, died on the 3rd June 1918 of "Renal Calculees." He is buried in the Devonport Corporation Cemetery.

A newspaper article entitled "GOOD TEMPLARY" is found betraying his fraternal connections with other organisations:
"ANNUAL MEETING OF THE NAVAL DISTRICT. The annual session of the Naval District Lodge of Good Templars was held on Saturday in the Royal Sailors' Rest, Devonport, when there assembled a goodly number of members. The District Chief Templar (Bro. J.N. McLeod), in his report, said that commissions in the Navy were now shorter than formerly, which made their work more difficult, but he was glad to announce an increase to 41. Bro. J.C. Souhamy had kept the flag flying in South Africa. the work in Lagos had slightly increased, and Bermuda, Barbados and St. Helena were keeping alive. In the home portion of their district they were holding their own. The "Implacable" Lodge had double its membership. Sis. Mrs. Richards. D.S.J.W., reported at good membership of juveniles, and Bro Sh. H. Browett, D. Sec. (Gillingham), reported and adult membership of 577. Bro. Malins G.C.T., and Bro. Ming P.G. Sent., were officially received."
The article goes on to show a raft of contested re-elections with Bro. Souhamy installed by The Grand Chief Templar as P.D.C.T.
