Family :

Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Son of Harry Wood Southey and Elizabeth Southey, of 10, Park Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil, Glam.

The family was closely associated with the Merthyr Express newspaper.

His father was also a mason in the same Lodge, as was his brother.

Unit / Ship / Est.: 1/5 The Welsh Regiment 

1/5th Battalion August 1914 : in Pontypridd Moved to Tunbridge Wells in November 1914 and in February 1915 to the Forth and Tay defences in Scotland. 17 April 1915 : attached to 159th Brigade in 53rd (Welsh) Division. Moved to Bedford. Sailed from Devonport 19 July 1915. Landed at Suvla Bay 9 August 1915. 8 October 1915 : amalgamated with 1/5th Bn, forming 4th Welsh Composite Bn. Resumed original identity 10 February 1916/ 11 December 1915 : evacuated from Gallpoli and moved to Egypt. On 3 July 1917, the two Bns formed the 4/5th Bn.

Action : Egypt 

Egypt was the base for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force which was engaged in the region, primarily against the Turks. In the early stages of the war Egypt was threatened by Turkish advances towards Suez which were defeated and the Turks retreated to Palestine. Most of the effort of the MEF was thereafter directed towards operations in Palestine and Syria. Many of those buried and commemorated in Egypt succumbed to wounds, disease or were army victims of naval actions in the region.

Harry Hartley SOUTHEY, Major, 1/5 The Welsh Regiment. Major Southey came from a wealthy family who owned the Merthyr Express newspaper. In his military career he became a captain of one of Merthyr Tydfil's 'Companies of Territorials' and he also served as a Major in the 5th Welch Regiment. During his career he travelled widely throughout the Mediterranean and the Middle East where he was able to collect Roman, Grecian, Egyptian and Asian objects. Major Southey was an enthusiastic amateur and collector rather than a serious academic with a particular area of study and it appears that he simply collected objects that pleased him. Unfortunately his enthusiasm for collecting did not extend to recording details of where he obtained the objects so that information about his collection is limited. At Cairo, he became friendly with a curator of an Egyptian museum who helped him to collect 'spoils from the tombs'. Major Southey packed these objects away safely in wooden crates ready to be shipped back to Wales. Major Southey was killed in action during the Battle of Gaza in the First World War and his family generously donated his collection to Cyfarthfa Castle Museum after his death. Despite the fact that there is little documentation, his collection is both an outstanding and fascinating legacy.
