1st Battalion August 1914 : in Dover. Part of 12th Brigade, 4th Division. Landed at Boulogne 23 August 1914.

Action : The Battle of Le Cateau and subsidiary actions 

26 August - 1 September 1914. Following the clash at Mons, the BEF was forced to retreat. I Corps under Haig was able to march almost unmolested but II Corps under Smith-Dorrien was confronted by large elements of German troops which threatened his line of retreat. In a classic ?stopping? action II Corps held the German attack and allowed time for the orderly retreat to continue.

Detail :

Captain Hans Robert SPARENBORG was first reported to have been wounded in September 1914, and in October as wounded and missing, was included in the monthly official casualty list for April 1915 as officially reported killed or died of wounds. It was subsequently ascertained that he was killed in action on 26th August 1914 at Harcourt near Le Cateau. A Corporal in his battalion stated that he was killed by a bursting shell. He was the eldest son of J Sparenborg of Forest Lodge, Kingswood, Surrey and was born in Calcutta on 2/11/1876. He was educated at Dulwich College and Caius College Cambridge. He joined the Royal Lancasters in May 1900 and served in West Africa. He was a first class interpreter of German. He left a wife and an 11 year old son.

When initiated in 1912, Hans was already serving as an Army Captain and resident in Ulverston. His contribution record shows that he was "Killed in Action Aug/14." He was a joining member of Caius Lodge No. 3355 on the 28th May 1914, stating residency in Dover and still listed as Captain. He was only a member a few months before this lodge too records he was "Killed in Action 1914."
