Born at Hebburn-on-Tyne. Husband of Eleanor Spence, of 20, Ferndale Rd., Waterloo, Liverpool.

SS Valdes, built by Craig, Taylor & Co. Ltd., Stockton in 1914 and owned at the time of her loss by Avetoro SS. Co. Ltd. (Yeoward Bros.), Liverpool, was a British steamer of 2233 tons.

Naval Campaign is defined as to include all sea operations where attrition rates are in ones and twos and which do not fall within specific naval battles such as Jutland, Coronel, Falklands etc. This includes Merchant Navy losses.

Detail :

On February 18th, 1917, Valdes, on a voyage from Manchester to Cherbourg with a cargo of flour & hay, was sunk by the German submarine U-84 (Walter Roehr), 7 miles south from Portland Bill. 11 persons were lost. Jan Lettens 22/01/2011 At 11.15 p.m. on the 17th February, the British steamer Valdes was toredoed without warning. It was a pitch-dark night, and nothing was seen before the explosion of the torpedo. The master and seven of the crew were thrown into the water as the ship went down. Three men went down with her. The port lifeboat was successfully launched, and 20 members of the crew embarked. The starboard lifeboat was blown to pieces. A trawler picked up the 20 survivors, but two of them died from exposure. Eleven men lost their lives.
