Died of wounds at 53 Casualty Clearing Station, France.

9 April - 16 June 1917. The Arras Offensive consisted of a series of linked attacks starting with the Anglo Canadian assault on the dominant Vimy Ridge feature through the battles in the Scarpe River valley and up to the assaults on the Hindenburg line in the summer of 1917.

Buckinghamshire Examiner 11th May 1917 - " It was reported on Monday that Mr. H.A. Sprake had been seriously wounded in France, and widespread sympathy is felt for Mrs. Sprake and family in their trouble. Mr. Sprake is well-known in the district, and for some years took an active part in almost everything which took place in the village. He was Captain of the Fire Brigade, and a Sergeant of the Special Constables when he was called up. He has only been in France a few weeks, and is serving with the R.G.A. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery from his wounds."
The Era - 16th May 1917 - "The death from wounds on the 6th inst. is announced of Herbert Arthur Sprake R.G.A., eldest son of the late Mr. Herbert Sprake, for many years the proprietor of Collin's Music Hall, Islington Green. After the death of his father in 1904, Mr. H.A. Sprake was for some time associated with Mr. Arthur Wililams in the management of Collins's, but of late years he resided at Great Missenden, Bucks. He leaves a widow to mourn her loss."
Bucks Herald - 19th May 1917 - "SPRAKE - At No. 53 Casualty Clearing Station, on May 6th, HERBERT ARTHUR SPRAKE (R.G.A.), eldest son of the late Herbert Sprake, of Collins's Music Hall, and dearly-loved husband of Annie E. Sprake of Deerhaddnn, Great Missenden."
