On 26th December 1915 HMS E6 left Harwich to carry out an anti-submarine patrol in the North Sea. As the submarine neared the Sunk Light Vessel she was signalled by a patrolling torpedo boat to keep clear. E6 continued on her course and within view of the torpedo boat struck a mine and disappeared. |

HMS E6 continued to be used in the patrol of the North Sea until 26th December 1915 when it met its fate, it left Harwich Essex to carry out an anti-submarine patrol in the North Sea, as E6 neared the Sunk Centre Light Vessel, she was signalled by a patrolling torpedo boat to keep clear. E6 continued on her course and in full view of the torpedo boat struck a mine and disappeared.

He was 36 when he received the Distinguished Service Medal - The London Gazette, Supplement 28948, Page 8501. There is reference to "Ernest Edward Stevens" being awarded the D.S.O., but as in Gazette 30909, Page 11180, it is for a different person (Leading Seaman O.N. J5146(Ch). Perhaps this requires more investigation as it would be unlikely that 2 different people with the same name would be serving in the submarine fleet.
