In late 1914 after the start of the Great War, Zaida - 150 feet long and 23 feet wide - was one of many big private yachts taken over by the Admiralty, and used for a variety of purposes. In 1916 HM Yacht Zaida was recorded as "Tender to HMS Hannibal", and was destroying petrol stores in the western Mediterranean. In August of that year she was in the Gulf of Alexandretta which has borders with Turkey and part of Syria. The Ottoman Empire at that time was allied to Germany. Zaida was blown to pieces on 17 August 1916 after apparently hitting a mine. |
