Naval Campaign is defined as to include all sea operations where attrition rates are in ones and twos and which do not fall within specific naval battles such as Jutland, Coronel, Falklands etc. This includes Merchant Navy losses.
Detail :
The Pilot Cutter "Protector" was reported to have been tasked to escort a ship in to the River Tyne, but hit a mine. Nineteen men lost their lives in the action, all of which are recorded on a plaque at St. Stephen and St. Aiden's Church, South Shields.

Northern Echo 10th April 1924 A TYNE WAR TRIBUTE - SOUTH SHIELDS TABLET TO BRAVE MEN OF LOST "PROTECTOR." The Tyne Pilotage Authority has placed in St. Stephen's Church, South Shields, a brass tablet in memory of the pilots, pilots' assistants and crew of the Tyne pilot cutter Protector, which was destroyed by enemy action off the mouth of the Tyne, on 31 Dec., 1916.
The Protector was blown up with sight of land on New Year's Eve, every life on board being loast. The even caused a painful sensation in South Shields, where the men lived, but particulars were not published in the newspapers, owing to the censorshiop. the names on the tablet are:-
First class pilots.- John Y. Bone, Thomas H. Marshall, Charles Burn, Robert Phillips, Robert Chambers, W.H. Tinmouth, Thomas Heron, Matthew Young, Wililam Young.
Second class pilot.-John H. Burn.
Pilots' assistants.-J.C. Cree, Leslie Johnston, William Leslie, Ralph Phillips.
Crew.-Thomas Reed, master; W.R. Forster, chief engineer; J.W. Nicholson, steward; Benj. Rumney, cabin boy; James Maconachie, fireman.
The tablet also records the names of two pilots' assistants, Septimus Sloane, s.s. Phare, and Hilton Young, ss. Spennymoor, who lost their lives at sea through enemy action.
The tablet, which was unveiled by Capt. C.K. Sergent, chairman of the Tyne Pilotage Authority, is being placed beside a memorial erected many years ago by the Tyne Lifeboat Institution in honour of the pilots who lost their lives by the capsizing of the lifeboat Providence, when attempting to rescue the crew of the Betsy, on 4 Dec. 1849."
