Detail :
On 22/02/1917 when passage Tyne to Shoreham (870 tons coal) the JOHN MILES was torpedoed and sunk off Saltburn, by UB-21 whilst under the command of Franz Walther (later of UB-75). The explosion occurred on the port side, abaft of the main hatch; Vessel sank quickly by the stern with loss of ten of the 14 crew, including master.
