Palestine is a generic term to cover actions in the region now consisting of Sinai, Israel, Jordan, Syria and Aden and involved operations against the Turks. Once the security of the Suez Canal was assured in 1915 the focus shifted to the area now within the post 1967 borders of Israel. In 1917 there were three battles at Gaza, which enabled the capture of Jerusalem in December. In 1918 the campaign continued north into the Jordan Valley then towards Damascus. The Armistice with Turkey was signed on the 31st October 1918.

Western Times 20 September 1918 "Captain Gilbert Doke Vicary, Devonshire Regiment, of Dyrons, Newton Abbot, Devon, a partner in John Vicary and Sons, tanners, fellmongers, and wool staplers, who died from wounds in Palestine, last November, aged 32, has left a fortune of the value of £52,355, the net personalty being £31,306. He gives £100 each to George Gregson, foreman; William Henry Brock, manager; Freerick Heywood, cashier, and Thomas Jackson, clerk."

Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer 20 November 1917 "VICARY.-November 10, of wounds received in action, aged 33 years, Capt. Gilbert Doke Vicary, Devon Regiment, second son of the late Charles Gilbert Vicary, of "Dyrons," Newton Abbot."

There are several sources quoting date of death differently. It may by that he "died in Palestine, November 18th, of wounds received on November 8th, 1917," but probate states 10th November which is shown against this record, it being an official record.
