Detail :
He embarked to France later in the year 1917, and saw action at Gheluvelt, near Ypres. A modern account relates to a narrative that whilst injured by machine gun fire he was assumed dead, but found alive by a German soldier amongst a pile of casualties who took notice of a gold masonic ring Bertram was wearing.
Bertram became a prisoner of war and following the war became a recipient of pioneering plastic surgery.
