13 October - 2 November 1914.The battle of Armentieres was one of a series of battles that in 1914 constituted the so called 'Race to the Sea', a series of outflanking moves where the Germans and the British/French Armies sought to turn the flank of the other as the moved towards the English Channel. As the momentum slowed, the contacts evolved into trench warfare.It was closely linked with the Battles of Messines and La Bassee. Following the capture of Armentieres on 17th October 1914 the British were forced on the defensive.
William Ernest WATERING, was a Company Sergeant Major in the 2/Royal Scots. He was the 2nd son of the late Arthur Fergerson O'Connor Watering and was born in Norwich, 17 April, 1881. He was educated at Heigham School. Enlisted in the Royal Scots 17 April 1899 and served in the South African War. 1899-1902 (Queen's and King's medals), and with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders, between Aug. and 15 October 1914. He was killed in action at Croix Barbee and was buried at Vieille Chapel|e. France. He was married and had a young son who was only 1 year old when his father died. The CWGC records are uncertain about his actual date of death which is listed as being between 12th and 15th October 1914. William WATERING was omitted from the 1921 Masonic Roll of Honour.
