9 April - 16 June 1917. The Arras Offensive consisted of a series of linked attacks starting with the Anglo Canadian assault on the dominant Vimy Ridge feature through the battles in the Scarpe River valley and up to the assaults on the Hindenburg line in the summer of 1917.

Gloucestershire Echo 21st May 1917 "MAJOR J.D.D.BRANCKER -
Major James Donaldson Dulany Brancker, R.G.A, P.S.C. killed in action on May 1, was the youngest son of the late J. Sefton Brancker (O.C.), and Mrs. J. Sefton Brancker of Newquay, Cornwall and member of a family closely connecting with Cheltenham half a century ago, his cousin being one of the founders and organising officials of the Ladies' College. Major Brancker went out with the original British Expeditionary Force and served on the Staff at the front till 1916, when he took command of a Siege Battery R.G.A."
Western Daily Press 25th June 1917 "BURNHAM-ON-SEA [...] MILITARY MEDAL - The first local soldier to win the Military Medal is Sergeant Charles Harris, 116th Battery, whose family reside at Wick Road. A shell wrecked the B.C. post killing Major Brancker and the other officers. Sergeant Harris then took command, and under shell fire extricated two officers and kept command until another officer arrived."

The Army and Navy Gazette of 30th June 1917 record his death under the section of Royal Garrison Artillery, and the Scotsman notes on the 4th June 1917, more than a month after his death that he is made a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order.
