Detail :
In his pre-military service he is recorded employed as a Groom.
Charles has a Seaman's service record which is complete showing an extensive naval career with an impressive array of ships and shore ships served starting, aged 18 in 31st July 1903 a seaman and ending in 1918 as a Chief Petty Officer Class II, with annotation about transferring to the R.A.F. It is no surprise that a record is found that he is listed in the UK, Royal Air Force Airmen Records: Service No. 313307. It is mentioned in his record that the second finger on his right hand is missing. During war service it appears that he was primarily based on shore based units (Pembroke II and President II).
