Listed as a Grocer & Draper, resident in Darlington when he joined Barnard Castle Lodge No. 1230 in 1916. His mother Lodge, Rose of Raby No. 1650 shows him as a grocer, resident at Butterknowle. He resigned from his mother lodge in November 1916, after joining Barnard Castle 8 months earlier. He is listed on the roll of honour of Barnard Castle, but not in the 1921 Book or 1940 Scroll.
