Frederick Bowdridge was born in 1908 in Burgeo, Newfoundland and the son of Leonard Bowdridge and Matilda Dicks. He was married to Annie Elizabeth Jeans of Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1934.Service Life:

“The motor tanker Montrolite was built completed in February 1926 by the Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft AG shipyard in Kiel, Germany. A large tanker of 11,309 gross registered tons, the ship was 511 feet long, 68.2 feet wide, and 38.1 feet deep. Twin diesel engines turned two propellers with 905 net horsepower, giving Montrolite a turn of speed of 10.5 knots when built. The vessel was built for, and only ever owned by the Imperial Oil Shipping Company Limited of Toronto Canada.” |

First Officer Frederick W. Bowdridge, Canadian Merchant Navy, who lost his life on the Motor Tanker Montrolite (Montreal) when it was sunk by U-109 on 4 February 1942. 43 members of the crew were lost at sea and he is commemorated on panel 22 of the Halifax Naval Memorial and with his wife at Mount Hermon Cemetery, Dartmouth.
