Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. Listed as a Sugar Refiner in 1895 when initiated into Zetland Lodge no 525. He was excluded from this Lodge under Rule 175 at the end of 1903, but appears to have rejoined in 1907. Two years later, in 1909, he joined Kinta Lodge No. 3212 at Ipoh, Eastern Archipelago.
