Family :
Born Sunderland, on 24th May 1877. Nothing is known of his early family life until he married Jane Alice Broomfield nee Schofield in Tynemouth in 1897. She was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, an engine fitter’s daughter, in 1876. John and Jane lived at 55 Buddle Street, Wallsend, Newcastle, Northumberland where he worked as an engine fitter in the shipbuilding industry. At the time of the 1911 census they had been married for 13 years with no children. They were resident at 74 High Street East, Wallsend at the time of the 1911 census and later of 51, Vine St., Wallsend.Service Life:

Mike: HMS Cyclops was repair ship, launched in 1905 as the merchant ship Indrabarah. She was used a fleet storage ship, and then submarine depot ship. She was scrapped in 1947. |

Natural causes is attributed those deaths due to causes that were not directly associated with the war. Included in this are wartime deaths resulting from, for example, theSpanish Influenza pandemic and its associated pneumonia problems and other attributions such as age and exhaustion. It also groups those who through Post Traumatic Stress committed suicide as a result of their experiences.
Detail :
John was a member of the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR). He served as an engine room artificer (E.R.A.) with the service number 318/EB. While serving on HMS Cyclops, a repair ship for the Grand Fleet, John died from disease on 11 January 1918. He is interred in Church Bank Cemetery, Wallsend.
For his Service, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
He is commemorated at the Masonic Hall at Wallsend, where 5 brethren are listed:
PODMORE, DAGLISH, ARMSTRONG, BROOMFIELD [BROCKFIELD] and MIDDLEMISS - four from Wallsend Lodge No. 2703 and one from Holy Cross Lodge. The memorial was dedicated by R.W.Bro.Colonel C.W. Napier Clavering, P.G.M (Northumberland), on the 29th September 1920.
