Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. He appears in Who's Who in New Zealand and the Western Pacific, 1925: "BARCLAY, George, lieut.-col., Hamilton r., Anderson's Bay, Dunedin, B.Scotland 1866, s. of Lawrence Barclay; m. 1903, Laura Milton. Ed. Tokomairiro Gram. Sch.; joined Govt. railways as cadet 1879; held various positions in Otago and Auck. districts, retiring in 1919; Deputy Chief Commissioner in charge of St. John Ambulance Brigade in N.Z. Volunteers 1885, and had continuous military service; capt. Dunedin Engineers 1896-1903; major unattached list; lieut.-col. commanding 16th (Waikato) Regt. under territorial scheme, 1911; 1912 transferred to command North Island Railway Battalion, N.Z.E.F.; left N.Z. as major N.Z.E.F.; lieut-col. while overseas; srved. in Egypt, Gallipoli, France, Belgium, England (twice mentioned in despatches); O.B.E. (mil.div.); Kt of Grace of the Order of St. John; Chevalier of Order of Danilo (Serbia); Volunteer Officers' dec.; Grand Sec. Grand Lodge of Freemasons of N.Z.; inspector-gen 33rd under Supreme Cl. of Scotland; Dist. Grand Prior of Masonic Knight Templars for Dominion of N.Z."

Initiated into Lodge of Otago in 1891, where he is listed as a Clerk resident at Dunedin, New Zealand. War service is recorded in the contribution register 1916-18 after which he continues to pay his dues.
On 25th October, 1917 he joined Boscombe Lodge No. 2158 as a Major, resident or based at Boscombe. He resigned the lodge 30th September, 1920.
