Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. 21216 Private Osman Sydney Arthur TOMBS, 48th (North Somerset) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry for the South African War.
Re-enlisted for the Great War and became 22140 Driver Osman Sydney Arthur TOMBS, New Zealand Field Artillery.
Discharged from service following the war on 18th October, 1919 after 2 years 363 days service.
He is commemorated for his service on the Auckland Museum Online Cenotaph.
