Early Life :
Born 1886 in Wandsworth London, Jeweller. Jeweller by trade.On the 19th July, 1909 at the Old Bailey, a Alfred Edward Byman was found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment with 9 months hard labour for stealing two watches from William. See the full case at the Old Bailey website.
It is not know what the connection is with New Zealand, other than he probably served in one of the New Zealand Battalions.

William enlisted in London in September 1914.
By the end of the war he was invalided with chronic rhuematism, which was contracted whilst in Egypt 1915.
Probate: SPIKINS William Charles of Warren Lodge Kingston Hill Surrey died 28 December 1927 at the Royal Northern Hospital Holloway Middlesex Probate London 12 May to Kate Peterkin Spikins widow William Charles Spikins and Frederick Robert George Spikins jewellers and Leslie Monk clerk. Effect £16386 14s. 11d.
His service is commemorated at the Auckland Museum Online Cenotaph.

William was initiated into Freemasonry late in the war in 1917 at Kingston-upon-Thames. He is not recorded as a soldier in the register of Dobie Lodge No. 889, but as a Jeweller. He pays his dues throughout and continues to pay them after the war.
