Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. 12/2203, Captain Leslie Stewart Ashton, Auckland Infantry Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Served at Gallipoli.
The NEW ZEALAND HERALD, VOLUME LIII, ISSUE 16130, 19th JANUARY, 1916 published a list of those invalided back to New Zealand:
"RETURNING INVALIDED - Men on the Willochra. - List of Aucklanders - Due at end of Month [By Telegraph - Press Association.] Wellington. Tuesday. The following are the names and occupations of sick and wounded New Zealand soldiers returning by the Willochra, which is due at Port Chalmers on January 30 or 31: - Auckland Infantry. Lieutenant Leslie Steward Ashton, warehouseman."
He may have returned to war service, even if at home in New Zealand, as records show that on the Unattached List "Lieutenant Leslie Stewart Ashton to be Captain, under the provisions of paragraph III, General Regulations, 1913. Dated 30th October, 1919."
He was discharged after 1 year 229 days service on the 1st September, 1916. 231 of those days served overseas.

Listed as a 24 year old Warehouseman from Auckland when initiated into Prince of Wales Lodge No. 1338. He is a war survivor having paid dues at least until 1921.
