Early Life :

Through the researches of Kathryn Atkin www.royaledward.net it has been possible to gain further information about Owen John Jones.

Owen John Jones was an officer, for some time Chief Mate, in the Dominion Line which sailed from Liverpool to Portland, Maine, U.S.A. also calling in Avonmouth. Jones was Chief Mate on SS Turcoman and other Dominion Line ships. Material relating to SS Turcoman has been purchased by K.Atkin, amongst which is a postcard addressed to him at Avonmouth.

As well as being "Royal Mail" Steamers, the Dominion Line operated three vessels with refrigerated chambers "for the carriage of Dairy Products. In the pre-war period, these regular services and the perishable goods carried was published in the Western Daily Press.

Natural causes is attributed those deaths due to causes that were not directly associated with the war. Included in this are wartime deaths resulting from, for example, theSpanish Influenza pandemic and its associated pneumonia problems and other attributions such as age and exhaustion. It also groups those who through Post Traumatic Stress committed suicide as a result of their experiences.

Detail :

Owen is shown with "war service" against his name in the masonic record and was exempt dues between 1915-1916. This is probably the minimum period he served, most likely involved in resupply.

Listed a a 34 year old mariner resident at Llanwnda at the time of his initiation in 1907, into Segontium Lodge No. 606, Carnarvon. His war service is recorded after which dues continue to be paid, but with a final annotation of "Died 7th April 1918." The date is out from official record, but not unusual that it is from this unofficial source.
