His rank was Private but he was promoted to temporary Sergeant .He was wounded in action on the 18th of August 1015,at Gallipoli (Gun Shot Wound ,left elbow and testicles) and was sent to hospital in England, where he reverted back to the rank of Private .
He re-joined his unit in the field (Western Front ) on the 14th of August 1916 .He was wounded for the second time on the 14th of November suffering from a gun shot wound to the thigh .He was sent to hospital in Birmingham ,then on to Hornchurch to recuperate .
After recovery from his second wound he was promoted to Sergeant ,then sent back to his unit in April 1917 He had a stint at a school of instruction in August before going back to the front a month later ..He was wounded for the third time on the 4th of October 1917 ,this time suffering to a severe gun shot wound to the head .The bullet had removed his eye and damaged his eye socket .He was put on the dangerously ill list ,but survived , and sent to hospital in England .He was classified unfit for further service and sent back home to New Zealand .He was given an artificial eye
