Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. WW1 4/1757 Sergeant Matthew Haldane Cook, 9th Reinforcements, New Zealand Engineers, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Enlisted 20th October, 1915. Embarked on HMNZT37 (Vessel Maunganui) 8th January 1916-8 February 1916 to Suez, Egypt serving with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force.
Discharged from service after 3 years 162 days on active service.
Commemorated for his service on the Auckland Museum Online Cenotaph.
