Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. 4/145A Second-Lieutenant Henry John Manning, New Zealand Engineers, New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
Enlisted for service on the 6th December, 1914. Promoted through the Junior and Senior Non-Commissioned ranks before gaining a commission as second-lieutenant in October 1918. Participated in the Egyptian and Gallipoli Campaigns 1914-1916.
Discharged from service on 9th February, 1920 after completing 5 years and 66 days service, all but 4 weeks served abroad.
