John is listed as a 36 year old carpenter resident at Premier Mine in 1909 at the time of his initiation into Premier Mine Lodge of Transvaal No. 3172. at Cullinan, Transvaal. He is not included on the 1921 or 1940 Masonic Rolls of Honour, the latter document only recording the name of Frederick H. McDowell, who cannot be found. Although there are many members with war service, John appears to be the only member of the Lodge to have paid the supreme sacrifice.
