Early Life :

Born c.1890 to Samuel Thomas and Jessie Smither. Husband of Kathleen Ada Smither (nee Couzens), of Wallasey, Cheshire. Married at Romford, Essex 20th December, 1918. They had four children: Kathleen J. (b.1919), Lancelot Samuel (b.1923), Betty Doreen (b.1926) and Allen Thomas (b.1927).

Unit / Ship / Est.: 28th Battalion London Regiment (Artists' Rifles) 

1/28th (County of London) Battalion (Artist's Rifles) August 1914 : at Dukes Road, Euston Road. Army Troops attached to 2nd London Division. Moved on mobilisation to St Albans area. 28 October 1914 : left Division and moved to France. Established as an Officers Training Corps based at Bailleul, going in April 1915 to St Omer. 28 June 1917 : transferred to 190th Brigade in 63rd (Royal Naval) Division.

Capt. Samuel Thomas SMITHER MC

He served in Italy in World War 2. Regimental Number 139292, Major Cheshire Regiment. A Certificate of Death from the War Office dated 27th September, 1944 records that he "died in Italy... of wounds received in action."

Probate SMITHER Samuel Thomas of 21 Manville-road Wallasey Cheshire died 29 April 1944 on war service Probate Liverpool 21 November to Kathleen Ada Smither widow. Effects £362 0s. 10d.

Citations & Commemorations :

  S. of YPRES-COMINES CANAL, 7th June, 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of a bombing party which was to co-operate with the tanks in the capture of a position. The tanks having failed to arrive at the right moment, he successfully took the position with a bombing party, and established communication with the battalion on his left, displaying great coolness and resource at a critical moment.

BAR TO M.C.: CONTALMAISON, 25th March, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the enemy were pressing their attacks down a communication trench this officer, moving along the top of the parapet and using his revolver, himself led two counter-attacks which drove the enemy back. His courage and the determination with which he led his men undoubtedly produced this successful result.
