Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. Stories of those who did survive are included as part of this site, especially those with high gallantry awards, those included against an external rolls of honour and those who had a distinguished career in wartime and military leaderhip.

Landed France 24th October, 1916.
Military Cross gained whilst in command 167 Light Trench Mortar Battery and was awarded as part of the New Year honours in 1919. London Gazette LG:31370/3 Jun 1919
The Northampton Mercury 14th April, 1939 edition shows an account of his funeral:- "FREEMASONS AND LEGION LINE PATH - FUNERAL OF CAPT. L.E.A. PROTHERO - Northampton town and county education officials, lay readers, Freemasons and members of the British Legion were represented at the funeral of Captain L.E.A. Prothero, at Yardley Gobion on Tuesday. Captain Prothero, who was chief attendance and employment officer to Northamptonshire Education Committee, died on Saturday. Mr. Prothero came to Northamptonshire soon after the War, in which he served with the 4th Buffs and 8th Middlesex Regiment with the rank of captain. He was awarded the Military Cross, and was twice mentioned in despatches.
Before the War he was in the service of Kent Education Committee. Mr. Prothero was a lay reader, and took services in many churches in the south of the county. He was a good organist and a keen musician. A Freemason, he belonged to Fidelity Lodge. He was a member of the British Legion. The scene at the village church in the brilliant sunshine was an impressive one. Freemasons lined the path to the church and members of the Pottersbury and Yardley Gobion Legion with their standard were at the entrance..."
