Early Life :
In 1939, he is listed on the census as a Railway Station Master with his wife Gertrude (nee Carter). He is commented to be in the A.R.P., so it appears he took an active Home role in the second world war. He is also listed on and submitted, having signed it, the 1939 staff list of Grantham Passenger Station, and that he entered service 24th December, 1906. His wage for being Station Master at this time was £450 p.a.At some time he moved to York and was resident there until his death. In York, he joined the Rotary Club and was a prominent member.

15324 SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 10 DECEMBER, 1919.
2nd Lt. Harold Gardner, 6th Bn., W. York. R. (T.F.), attd. 13th Bn., Dur. L.I. "For conspicuous gallantry and able leadership on 24th October, 1918, during the attack at Rue du Pont. He led his company with great skill through the belts of wire in face of very heavy machine-gun fire, and finally overcame the enemy resistance. After the objective had been reached he personally supervised the consolidation of the position."
A note of his death appeared in the Grantham Journal 14th August, 1953: "...A Yorkshireman Mr. Gardner spent much of his railway career in the West Riding and during World War I he won a commission with the 13th Durham Light Infantry (25th Division), and in 1918 was awarded the Military Cross. Mr. Gardner was president of the Rotary Club of Grantham in 1942-43, and was a prominent Freemason being a member of the Doric Lodge, a founder member and Immediate Past Master of the William Peters Lodge, and held office at the time of his death in the Doric Chapter and the St. Wulfram's Mark Master Masons' Lodge."
