Early Life :
Born 8th February, 1857, at Toxteth Park, to Robert and Elizabeth Seddon (nee Hately). He was baptised 15th March, 1857 at St James Church, Toxteth Park, his father a ‘blockmaker’, and resident at 8 Chesterfield S.Married as James Hateley Seddon Seddon, master mariner, a 26 year old bachelor, on 22 March 1885 at St Peter’s Church, Everton, Walton on the Hill. Liverpool while residing at 49 Wentworth Street. His father is given as Robert Seddon, a ‘spar maker’. The bride is 21 year old Mary Gilmour Galbraith of 56 Cothart St, daughter of Peter Galbraith, master mariner.
James Hateley Seddon, was a Chief Officer recorded as living at 29 Scholar Street in the 1903 returns, and a check with the 1901 census returns shows Mary G Seddon, aged 34, born in Scotland living at 29 Scholar Street, Edge Hill with two sons and one daughter, which leads to the presumption that James Seddon was away at sea. James was 28 when he had married Mary Gilmour Galbraith, registered in the first quarter of 1885, and in 1891 they are found to be living with Mary’s mother at 69 Wordsworth Street, Toxteth.
Mary died just over twelve years following her husband in December 1927, at 8 Barrington Road, Toxteth Park. Mary’s brother, Peter Joseph Hewitt Galbraith, a marine engineer, died just five months later on 27 April 1916, in Genoa, Italy

James was initiated into HAMER LODGE No. 1393 on 13 November 1903, a Chief Officer, aged 43 and residing at 29 Scholar Street. He is recorded in the lodge registration book as No 553 and was proposed by Charles William Bawden, seconded Walter Whitelaw. Passed to the second degree on 22 December 1903, raised to the third degree on 22 January 1904, the issue of his Grand Lodge certificate is shown in the return book as 10 March 1904, while the registration book has it received on 13th June, 1908.
It is recorded in the 100 Anniversary Booklet (1872-1972) of the lodge that the Worshipful Master announced in March 1916 the death of two brethren, Captain T Quayle, killed on active service, the other a Captain James Liddon, who was buried at sea. Closer study of the original lodge records shows that the handwriting was mis-interpreted when the booklet was being written, as the two persons mentioned are J Quayle, and James Seddon.
