Education & Career :

Robert Bruce Singlehurst was the son of Harriette Anne Singlehurst (nee Brodie) of Lynton, Christchurch Road, Sidcup, Kent, and the late Paul Robert Singlehurst; husband of Margaret Singlehurst (nee Ashburner) of 3 Woodthorpe Road, Putney, London.

He was born at Brazil in 1884, of British parents. His father was a native of Liverpool and his mother was born at Culross, Perthshire, Scotland. They were married at St.Helen's C.of E. Church, Sefton in 1878.

Robert had five siblings; all but one of whom were born in Brazil; Percy Brodie (b 1880), Linda Hardell (b 1881), Reginald (b at Liverpool in 1882), Muriel Rhoda Dick (b 1885) and Frieda Catherine Jessie (b 1891).

In 1891 Robert and his mother and siblings were living at 3 Greenbank Terrace, Edinburgh.

His father died at Parnahiba, Brazil in 1898, leaving the equivalent of 340,000 (at current values) and his family returned to the UK.

In 1901 the Singlehurst family were living at 4 Sefton Drive, Toxteth Park. Robert, aged seventeen, was a chartered accountant's clerk.

Robert and his wife were married at Ulverston in 1909. They had three children; Robert Maurice Ashburner (b 1911), Beryl Margaret (b 1914) and George Basil (b 1915).

In 1911 Robert was a chartered accountant and was living at 18 Lytton Grove, Putney, London with his young family. His mother and two of his sisters were staying in a hotel at 105 and 106 Queens Gate, London.

Probate of his estate was obtained at London on the 22nd August 1916 by his widow, Margaret. His effects were valued at 6,960 6s 5d (610,000 at current values.)

Northumberland Fusiliers He died 30-Apr-16, aged 36 years. He is buried at SERRE ROAD CEMETERY No.2

MC Citation - Temporary Captain Robert Bruce Singlehurst, 12th Battalion, The Northumberland Fusiliers. For conspicuous gallantry when leading a raid on the enemy trenches. Several of the enemy were killed and taken prisoners. Captain Singlehurst, with great coolness and bravery, remained on the enemy's parapet till all his men had been withdrawn, and later went out again under fire to search for and bring in the wounded.

Robert Bruce Singlehurst is commemorated on the following local memorials Liverpool College, Sefton Park Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby Liverpool Cricket & Rugby Clubs

His brother Reginald Singlehurst was also KIA in WW1, as a Captain in the King's Royal Rifles, 24th Bn, attd. 9th Bn. Memorial at Pozieres Memorial, panel 61-64.
