Family :

Edward Frederick Kelaart was born in Ceylon (probably at Trincomolie), to Edward Frederick (Senior) and mother Elizabeth. His father died on the 31st August 1860 on the ship in the family's passage back to Britain and was noted as a Lieutenant Colonel and Medical Doctor Staff Surgeon of HM Army. More notably he is credited with being a respected physicist and naturalist. Edward's baptism is recorded on 13th February 1861 at St Alphege, Greenwich.

He married Edith Mary Dunbar (nee Malam) 14th July, 1887 at St. James, Buxton, Derby, England but was already living at 36, St Johns Park, Blackheath, Kent from at least early 1887. At the time of the 1891 census he is recorded at 12 Old Chatham Road, with wife and daughter Phyllis and by 1900 had moved to 4 Lansdowne Place, Blackheath. His career improved his situation and towards the latter part of his life is recorded living at addresses in Marylebone.

Education & Career :

He was in the Blucher House of the Wellington College between 1872 and 1877.

Edward Kelaart became a stockbroker by profession, listed as a Stock Exchange Clerk (1881) and seen with applications to the Stock Exchange to be a 'Jobber' from 1887. He had an office at 1 Shorter's Court, London and later at the White House, Telegraph Street E.C. His probate record shows him resident at the time of his death at 31 Throgmorton Street, and the Stock Exchange perhaps indicating that his life revolved around the business of making money.
