Action : Naval Campaign

Naval Campaign is defined as to include all sea operations where attrition rates are in ones and twos and which do not fall within specific naval battles such as Jutland, Coronel, Falklands etc. This includes Merchant Navy losses.

Detail :

John CARLING was initiated into FRATERNITY Lodge No 1418 on 26th July 1917 and within three weeks he was lost when his vessel, the SS Thames (403 grt) , was lost at sea. The vessel was based in Hull and sailed from Middlesbrough to Fecamp with a cargo of pig iron on 14th August 1917. Nothing more was heard of the vessel and it is believed that it was sunk by gunfire by the German U-Boat U-63 with the loss of all hands.
