Early Life :
He was born in Darlington c. 1875, baptised on 10th Mar of that year at Holy Trinity, Darlington. He was the eldest child of John Watson Armitage and Caroline Louisa Barrett. He was 6 by the time his first sister came along - Florence Jessi b.1881 and another 4 years before his brother was born in 1885. One further sister appears in the records - Effie Carrie born 1888.By 1907, he was resident at 83 Sherwin Road, Lenton, Nottinghamshire and it was in this year he married Caroline.
By 1911 he was resident at 5 Grove Street, Beeston living with Caroline and had 2 children, John Edwin and Doreen Lilian.
