Early Life :
There is very little to find on this soldier and only the records of United Grand Lodge are able to provide a firm basis to confirm name, location and date of death. William was initiated in Uitenhage, South Africa, which could mean that he was born and raised as native of that country.A search of CWGC shows 4 entries, the only one which could be our man is 10822 Private William Austin of the South African Infantry who died 21st September 1917. Further work is necessary to corroborate this. This soldier's father was called Thomas Cook Austin, which lends further credence that this is the correct person
