Detail :
Gloucester Echo 17th December 1917: SEC-LIEUT. L.H. BANWELL. The death has occurred in action of Second Lieutenant L.H. Banwell, of the Gloucestershire Regt. Lieutenant Banwell was for several years one of the representatives of J.S. Fry and Sons, in the Birmingham district, where he had many friends. He joined the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps about 12 months ago, and was gazetted to the Gloucestershire Regiment in June last, going to the front a month later.
Birmingham Mail 15th December 1917: News has been received of the death in action during the recent fighting of Sec-Lieut. L.H. Banwell, of the Gloucester Regt. Lieut Banwell was for several years, one of the representative of J.S. Fry and Sons, in the Birmingham district, where he had many friends and was extremely popular. He joined the Inns of Court O.T.C. about 12 months ago, and was gazetted to the Gloucester Regt. in June last, going to the front a month later.
One of his fellow officers, writing to Mrs Banwell, the widow, at 1, Mossfield Road, Kings Heath says:- "Lieutenant Banwell was hit in the head by a machine gun or a sniper, and died instantaneously. He was doing extremely well under very difficult circumstances, and at a very critical period. His loss is a great blow to the battalion."
