The records at United Grand Lodge show in the register for Unity, Peace and Concord, show that he was "Killed in action 21 July 1914". This being true it would mean that Colour Sergeant Richard Downes would be the earliest casualty of the Great War. This warrants further investigation as the Great war was not truly precipitated until August 1914. 2RS history shows that it was on training, recalled to barracks on the 29th July. Was he killed on exercise, just prior to the war?
