Lieutenant Horace Heptonstall BACKHOUSE, MC 8th The King?s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment The son of George Heptonstall Backhouse and Grace Backhouse of The New Inn, Ermington, Devon. He was a Victualler (Publican) who was Initiated on the 2nd December 1908;Passed 3rd February and Raised on the 7th April 1909. Killed in action on the 23rd August 1918 aged 33. He is buried in Douchy-les-Ayette British Cemetery, France, Grave Reference Plot 2, Row G.11 and he is Remembered on a Memorial in Ermington Parish Church.The Commonwealth War Graves Register lists him as BACKHOUS which is probably a typographical error. He was awarded the Military Cross.
