Action : HM Submarine E22, Sinking of

On Tuesday 25th April 1916, E22 was on patrol in the North Sea. The submarine was hit and badly damaged by a single torpedo. This had been fired from the German U-Boat UB-18 (Lieutenant Commander Otto Steinbrinck). E22 sank immediately. There were only two survivors out of the crew of thirty-three. The survivors were: Sig William Thomas George Harrod J10833 (who was the lookout) and ERA Frederick Samuel Buckingham M3549 who had gone onto the bridge to examine the air whistle just before the torpedo hit. Finding himself in the water he attempted (unsuccessfully) to assist Stoker 1st Class Patrick Flynn. He then assisted (also unsuccessfully) Lieutenant Carles. Thomas Harrod and Frederick Buckingham were rescued by UB-18 and became a Prisoners of War for the duration in the Prison Camp at Dulmen in Westphalia. Those who were lost were:

Wilfred Elliott, after learning his trade as an engine smith, enlisted in the Royal Navy in September 1902 for twelve years and worked as an engine room artificer (fitter). When the war began, Wilfred volunteered to remain in the Navy. On 25 April 1916, 270779 Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class Wilfred Elliott was serving on the submarine E22 in the North Sea off Great Yarmouth, when his boat was torpedoed by a German U-boat. Only two of the crew of thirty-three sailors survived and were taken prisoner.

News of the loss of E22 was reported across the Empire, and which can be seen in the Australian Bendigo Advertiser printed out of Victoria. "NAVAL LOSSES. - SUBMARINE LOST - Germans Sink E22 - Only Two Men Saved. London 28th April. The official Press Bureau states that a German wireless message announces that the British submarine E22 has been sunk in the North Sea. The advice adds that only two members of the crew were saved."

Wilfred Elliott is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
