28 September - 11 November 1918. As the pressure mounted in other sectors the opportunity was seized to escape the confines of the Ypres Salient. Within five days the British Second Army had pushed the Germans back over the 1917 battlefield and were advancing on Courtrai. After action at Courtrai the advance continued into Belgium until the Armistice on 11th November.
Detail :
Cecil had served in the Officer Training Corps prior to attesting on the 11th December 1915 for the duration of the war into the North Cyclist Battalion. Service No. 20982. His military service though, does not start until 13th June 1916. In May 1917, he was transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps and was embarked at Folkestone, arriving at Boulogne on the same day, 14th May 1917, joining the Cyclist Base Depot shortly after. A month later he was with the VIIth Cyclist Corp Battalion, in the field. Injured by September 1917, he was in hospital and re-joined the battalion less than a month later. He took leave in February 1918 to U.K. and again in August 1918 to Paris. The following month, his casualty card states he was "killed in action."
Probate ILEY Cecil Christopher of 61 Bewick-road Gateshead died 29 September 1918 in France or Belgium on active service. Probate Durham 5 August to Frances Iley widow. Effect £130.
For his service he was awarded the British War medal 1914-19 and the Victory Medal, which were sent, received and signed for by his mother, Frances, in 1921.

Employed as a Draper and resident in Gateshead when initiated in 1913. The contribution record shows his war service and notes that he was "Killed in Action 29.9.18." Recorded on the 1921 and 1933 Rolls.
