Detail :

Enlisted for service 15th June, 1885 becoming 134429 Stoker Charles Frederick Letchford, Royal Navy. He was 5 feet 6 inches in height, with brown hair, grey eyes and ruddy complexion. He is noted to have been a Bargeman prior to his military service. Part of the 1st joint index finger on his right hand was missing which didn't seem to prevent him having a long and full career on the high seas. He served aboard HMS Thalia, Asia, Mosquito, Tartar, Severn, Repulse, Blenheim and Humber amongst other shore based establishments.

Rose through the ranks as a Stoker, reaching the rank of Petty Officer Stoker in 1906. His conduct throughout his service was described as Very Good.
