The East African Campaign was a series of battles and guerrilla actions which started in German East Africa (now Tanzania) and ultimately impacted portions of Mozambique, Northern Rhodesia, British East Africa, Uganda, and the Belgian Congo. The German colonial forces, led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck, skillfully fought for the duration of World War I and surrendered only after that war had ended. Other campaigns were conducted in West and South West Africa.
Detail :
REGIMENTAL QUARTERMASTER SERGEANT GEORGE GRAHAM McDONALD SOUTH AFRICAN MOUNTED RIFLES At present we have little information on this Masonic Brother. We do know that he died in German East Africa (Namibia) The cemetery in which he is buried contains seventeen Commonwealth burials and a memorial stone commemorating five who have no known graves. All but one grave were brought in after the armistice. Thirteen are graves of men killed at the battle of Sandfontein on 26 September 1914 and originally buried there and the memorial stone commemorates five who were killed in the same battle. He is buried with his Brother Freemason Lieutenant Francis Lewis NORTHWAY who was a member of the same lodge (Charles Egan Lodge No. 1975) and who was killed on the 26th September at Sandfontein.
