In 1917, during the war years, William was initiated into St. George's Lodge No. 1958 at Portsea. He was listed as an Engineer Lieutenant of the Royal Naval Reserve and resident at Southampton. He does not appear to have advanced further than that of Entered Apprentice. The contribution record is naturally short before it states "Died 18.11.17," which is at odds with the official record.
