His long and varied service makes this naval officer easy to spot amongst a crowd who would call themselves Robert Read. The masonic record shows HMS Lancaster which ties in with him being aboard between 1910 and 1912. He is notably a 1st Class Petty Officer for most of his career, whose length exceeds the usual one page for naval ratings.
He enlisted into the Royal Navy at Chatham commencing service on the 26th November 1898. Starting off on HMS Impregnable and continued on to HMS' Pembroke I II and III, Racoon, Wilsfire, Duke of Wellington, Ganges, Frequiem, Victory, Ocean, Acheron, President, Lancaster and Formidable. The second page shows that he was invalided from service 3rd August 1914, whilst serving with HMS Pembroke I.
At present there is no link to military service at the time of his death, so it is possible that whatever caused him to be invalided from the Navy and perhaps caused his death, was reason enough to include him on the roll. Requires further investigation.
