Action : Post War

Post War includes all operations in all theatres up to 31st August 1921. This excludes the campaign in Russia against the Bolsheviks. It also includes men who succombed to wounds post war and who died from various causes whilst still in the services but post war.

Detail :

ROSEVEAR, Archibald Malcolm, Captain, 13th (County of London) Princess Louise's Kensington Battalion, The London Regiment Archibald (and his brother Frank Rudolph ROSEVEAR- see his record) was the son of William Arthur Wild and Nellie Sophie Wild and he changed his name by deed poll. He presumably took his stepfather's surname as Nellie is recorded as next of kin as Nellie Rosevear. He also had two older brothers (Leonard Arthur and Donovan Reginald) although it is not known if they changed their name. Archibald enlisted as a Private in the 23rd (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (the First Sportsmens Battalion) but soon was identified as officer material and was Gazeted on the 15th December 1914 as a 2/Lieutenant in the 13th Battalion. As yet we cannot identify Archibold in the battalion war diary but at some point he sustains wounds and is returned to Britain. The next mention is in the London Gazette dated 14th April 1919 which states that 'Captain A M Rosevear (13th Battalion London Regiment) relinquishes his commission on account of ill health caused by wounds, and retains the rank of Captain'. Clearly the wounds are serious as his death notice apears in The Times on the 27th August 1920; 'On 25th August at Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital, CAPT ARCHIBALD MALCOLM ROSEVEAR, late 13th (Princess Louise's Kensington) Battalion London Regiment the beloved son of Mrs Nellie Rosevear. Deeply mourned by all. Funeral leaves Meadowside 43 Upper Richmond Road, Putney 3pm Monday 30th for Putney Vale Cemetary'. Archibald does not appear in the CWGC on line listing. This is presumably because he had surrendered his commission before he died and was therefore not on active service. We have come across one other freemason (W Bro KENNEDY) who was likewise omited from the CWGC record for he same reason. That said many men who had been invalided out of the forces but died from wounds or illness before 31st August 1921 are included. We will make representation to CWGC for his inclusion in the national war memorial record. Sources Tom Thorpe 13/London Regiment Historian Masonic Roll of Honour 1921
