Action : German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line |
The German Army realised that shortening the front line by retiring to better prepared positions would reduce the demand for manpower and offer better defensive capabilities. Accordingly the German engineers constructed what the British referered to as The Hindenburg Line in the sector of the Western Front largely behind (to the East of) the 1916 Somme battlefield. The retreat was done in stages. The official dates covering this period are 14 March to 5 April 1917.

RUTHERFORD, William Taylor, Private, 8/East Yorkshire Regiment Formerly 2419 Royal Field Artillery The son of Alexander and Mary Rutherford of Lesbury, Northumberland he was born at Alnmouth. He was a Bus Proprietor of Lesbury and was Initiated on the 1st December 1909; Passed 2nd February 1910 and Raised on the 4th May 1910. He was killed in action on the 15th March 1917 aged 37 and is buried in Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France, Grave Reference II.G.23. His name appears on a wall plate in the Parish Church of St. Mary The Virgin, Lesbury.
