Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. 12/2034 Lieutenant James Edward Hedley Mewett, 4th Auckland Infantry Battalion, New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
Awarded the Military Cross 30th April, 1917 "For Conspicuous Gallantry during a raid on enemy trenches."
In the second world war he was a Temporary Major in the Home Guard and appointed Deputy Group Director for Group 6A Palmerston North.
