Although many perished in times of national conflict and in the service of their country, many more survived including those interned as Prisoners of War. His story is picked up at the time of his death in the Hampshire Telegraph of the 3rd December, 1943:- " Death of Mr. H. Pannell Portsmouth has lost a well-known sportsman by the death at his residence at Denvilles on Sunday of Mr. Henry Pannell, Vice-Chairman of the Portsmouth Football Club. He had been in failing health for a long time, but maintained his cheerfulness and his interest in business and sport in a remarkable way. He was in his 59th year. He was popular as mine host at the Crystal Palace, Fratton Bridge. He was born there and lived there throughout his life. He was also the proprietor of the Grosvenor Hotel at Southsea, and at one time held the licence of the Heroes of Waterloo at Waterlooville. He was a life member of the Portsmouth, Gosport and District Licenced Victuallers' Protection and Benevolent Society. As a boy and young man, Mr. Pannell placed football and cricket in Portsmouth, and for 31 years has been a member of the Portsmouth F.C. Board of Directors. He was appointed Vice-Chairman in 1940, and was a member of the Management Committee of the London Combination. During the last war he served in the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) as a Lieutenant, and for gallantry in France was awarded the Military Cross.
He was a prominent Freemason. He was Past Master of the Portsmouth Lodge, a founder member of Southsea lodge of which he became the second Worshipful Master, and for some time was Director of Ceremonies. He also held Provincial office, being a Past Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies. Mr. Henry Pannell leaves a widow and one daughter."
